Lisa Reihana (b. 1964,) is a multidisciplinary artist of Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Hine and Ngāi Tu descent. Reihana’s practice concerns personal translations of cultural values and aesthetics, expressing the dichotomy of her experience as a Māori woman in contemporary society. Reihana is interested in the representation of identity and history, and how they intersect with ideas of community and place.
Reihana’s works are staged interpretations of Māori histories and traditions. She reinterprets narratives of sexual exploitation, violence and exploration, subverting the colonial and imperial gazes, and reflecting it back on itself. Reihana’s subjects are unfixed, moving between and beyond cultural and social conventions and expectations. Her worlds are liminal spaces, places where past, present and future are all subject to change.
