Auckland based artist Peter Miller creates painting in the genres of still life and portraiture, often creating work that explores the balance between humans and nature.
In Observation Post, the hand acts as a scale holding the bird in equilibrium with the figure- should the hand move the bird will fly away. This composition conjures ideas of power dynamics and harmony between humans and the natural world. Typical of Miller’s work the background of the image offers a neutral spatial element. This is used to create a sense of disquiet, of an altered reality.
Peter Miller is an acclaimed artist and has been a regular finalist in some of New Zealand’s most prestigious art awards - most recently winning the Molly Morpeth Canady Art Award and a being awarded as a finalist in the Wallace Art Awards. His work features in public and private collections across Europe, USA and Australasia, including a number of works in the James Wallace Arts Trust in Auckland.
