Darcell Apelu (b.1990) is a multidisciplinary artist of Nuiean and Pakeha decent based in Mount Maunganui. Apelu's practice involves autobiographical perspective of being afakasi within Aotearoa and her experiences in contemporary society. Apelu's work considers ideologies such as legacy and ownership in relation to eurocentric viewpoint and kaitiakitanga guardianship. Reflecting back through the materials of the gold mirror proposes the viewer re-evaluate what 'possession' is as principle and value system.
