Te Whanganui-a-Tara artist, Elisabeth Pointon, has collaborated with local leather goods label, Yu Mei, on a limited edition custom made/hand made handbag.
Connected by way of Jhana Millers Gallery, Pointon specified each element of the bag (a series of custom design elements added to Yu Mei's signature black Braidy Bag). The bag was released alongside Elisabeth’s exhibition THERE IS AN ARTWORK IN ALL OF THIS. which ran as part of TENT Art Weekend in November 2021 and was originally planned to be shown/pop-up at the Yu Mei Lounge in Newmarket, Auckland.
There literally is an artwork within the work, by way of a custom lining screen printed with a Tree of Life motif based off a rare Luribaft rug that Pointon’s late father, a purveyor of oriental rugs, gifted her. The strap of the bag takes references from Pointon’s text works with ‘WORTH IT.’, fashioned from Yu Mei’s signature New Zealand deer nappa in arial font with a full stop. The reverse of the strap features an edition number.
