Conceived as part of the Colin McCahon centenary year celebrations our touring exhibition, A Way Through will see the monumental Gate III (1970) return to its place of origin, Auckland for the first time since its purchase for the Victoria University of Wellington Art Collection in 1972. Supported by archival material especially gathered for the occasion, the exhibition offers a number of thematic entry points into the work: addressing its material history as a commissioned artwork destined for a university collection; locating it within McCahon’s artistic output; and as a lens on the fraught socio-political times in which it was painted.
Please join Director of Adam Art Gallery Te Pātaka Toi Christina Barton, Collection Officer Sophie Thorn, and Curatorial Intern Nina Dyer, at 3pm for a curators talk followed by the exhibition opening function at 4pm.
An Adam Art Gallery Te Pātaka Toi touring exhibition.
