"...Interested in the fluidity of matauranga Maori..." (Brickell, 2021) Brickell's works speak of learning, re-learning, change and perhaps most importantly, evolution. Alluvial, referring to the erosion, re-shaping and depositing of loose material is a natural form of evolution ever-present within the environment.
Ambiguous and amorphous, Brickell engages with the idea of evolution via her constructed surface and again in wet rabbit skin glue atop the foundation with a derivative of it; thread. Worked and manipulated, symbols, motifs and abstracted forms swim to the surface, allowing an idea of how these fragmented parts could form a whole.
Brickell's addition of 'Hours' to 'Alluvial' can perhaps be read as a call to action. As always however, Brickell's call is gentle, alluring like the tide.
