Join Scott Lawrie Gallery on Wednesday 10/11 at 6pm for an Artist Talk by Monique Lacey on The Truth of the Matter

Authenticity is a yearning for Monique Lacey - an artist who, like most of us, has been deeply affected by our post-truth world of conspiracy theories, fair and free elections being called into question, and a general dismissiveness of logic and reason in favour of online froth.

Yet the counterpoint to all of this turbulence can be found in just about every work on show here; a delightful exhibition of new sculpture that’s both powerful, deeply reflective, and unmissably bold.

What’s exciting about ‘The Truth of The Matter’ is rather than dip into the easy luxury of a fresh direction, Monique has pummelled, crushed, waxed, resined, painted and plastered her way through to a new body of work that is beautifully nuanced and sensitively handled. Elegant and refined, this is the work of an artist who is maturing with every show. And this one, I believe, is her best yet.

It’s also (with one or two jewel-like exceptions) entirely monochromatic.

Kandinsky once said that materialism turned the life of the universe into an evil, useless game. And perhaps there’s an element of this at play here; stripping out the decorative and magnetism of a ‘targeted appeal’, while allowing the work to maintain its own sense of personality, presence and stature in an entirely honest way; to the truth of the matter.
