Artist Talk
jhanamillers.comJoin Matariki Williams and Ayesha Green as they discuss the potential of portraiture within a Mātauraka Māori framework. This event is part of the public programme for Face to Face: Portrait Festival.
In exploring the intersections between Eurocentric portraiture and taoka Māori they will discuss issues surrounding the settler imaginary, Māoriland tourism campaigns and what it means to be making Māori representation today. In relation to Green’s newly opened exhibition, Good Citizen at Jhana Millers Gallery, they will touch on issues of agency as a Māori painter and navigating the gaze of diverse audiences. Who’s stories get told through portraiture and how do those stories serve Māori representation and the diverse way that it is expressed? Williams brings her knowledge of taoka Māori and together they will introduce ideas of portraiture outside of the western concept of representation.
