Speaking Surfaces asks how do surfaces speak? How are stories and experiences inscribed in the surfaces that surround us? A collaboration between St Paul St Gallery and AUT Spatial Design, Speaking Surfaces is a dynamic and welcoming space that serves as a platform for encounters through exhibitions, conversations, performances, gatherings, screenings and teaching. It includes a Creative Wānanga developed especially for Auckland Arts Festival.

Over one weekend during Auckland Arts Festival, St Paul St Gallery activates space in response to the kaupapa of Speaking Surfaces. Facilitated by Atamira Dance Company artistic director Jack Gray and special guests, this creative wānanga invites the public to discuss, share and participate in a tactile, multi-sensory series of events situated both in the gallery and outside. We take you on a surprising journey – walking/buses/trains/cars – to unpack, map and explore our collective experience, and the terrain, of Tāmaki Makaurau.
