Dr Rachel Buchanan (Taranaki, Te Atiawa) will explore two radical, slow-burning, intertwined but often overlooked creative acts: that of record-making and that of record-keeping. Buchanan considers records created, transmitted or kept by Mere Ngamai, Te Ngoungou Okeroa, JC Sturm, Germaine Greer, Agnes Denes and Monica Brewster; discussing how their land, art, performance art, poetry, philanthropy and intellectual brilliance has changed – and will continue to change – our worlds.
Buchanan is the author of Ko Taranaki Te Maunga, her own personal story of Parihaka and the impact of confiscation, beginning with the death of her father Leo, a man with affiliations to many of Taranaki’s eight iwi. Buchanan also wrote The Parihaka Album: Lest We Forget.
