Kapiti Coast based French-Canadian artist Micheline Robinson presents Ebb & Flow, a collection of large-scale works that blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture. The carved flat metal surfaces trick the eye into translucency, luminescence and optical illusions of 3 dimensionality. “With Ebb & Flow I wanted to go purely to the visceral. I tend to over-conceptualise/intellectualise my work and this time I wanted to celebrate the intimate relationship between colour and the sensuality of form”.

In Micheline’s paintings, the pieces seem to capture light from within and the vibrant pigments appear to flow across surfaces like currents of water or unfurling vegetation, embodying the collection's title. The atoms and elements that comprise our world are rendered within a playful environment, inviting the viewer to see themselves in the work and asking the viewer to find the beauty within their random existence.

Through the meticulous handpainted layering of inks on carved metal panels, the strategic interplay of light and shadow, and the emergence of organic forms that oscillate between the recognizable and the mysterious, Robinson's artwork does more than occupy space; it transports the observer to another dimension. Here, we are reminded of our tangibility and the beauty inherent within it.

The installation not only captures the artist's personal response to the disjointed nature of modern life but also fosters a sense of escapism, encouraging the audience to ponder the weight of the unseen, question the very fabric of reality, and actively engage in the narrative of their times. Each piece in Ebb & Flow acts as a catalyst for reflection, urging visitors to delve into the depths of human emotion and consciousness in this era of pervasive illusion and uncertainty.
