Artist and critic John Piper used the phrase 'war art' to describe this and related works, including some in the current exhibition Between Croft and Corfe. He explained this was not the conventional meaning of war art, but references Hodgkins’s use of metaphor. This notion is explored, together with the painting's role as a nocturne and major contribution to the Neo-Romantic Movement.
Elizabeth Eastmond is a writer, researcher and curator and has lectured in Art History at the University of Auckland, focusing on women artists and book arts. She has published and curated exhibitions on artists including Frances Hodgkins and Alexis Hunter, co-founded the journal ANTIC and ran the gallery, bookstore and mini-cinema Tivoli on Waiheke. Recently (2022) Eastmond curated the exhibition bad ambassador by the collective et al.
