In partnership with Elam School of Fine Arts we are hosting an In Focus session with visiting Naarm Melbourne-based artist, writer, and curator Andy Butler. This session will explore methods for writing as an artist and how writing can be an impactful process of discovery. There will be writing prompts to find emotional and conceptual entry points into an artwork, how to think about an artwork's place in the world, and how to communicate ideas to others.

This event is free.
Space is limited to 15 participants, 10 participants from Elam School of Fine Art, 5 participants from the wider public.
This session requires an expression of interest, there are no drop ins.
This event will be held in the Kit, located in the lower ground floor of Artspace Aotearoa, entrance is via 8 East St.
This location is accessible with assistance.
Wear comfortable, warm clothing.
Light refreshments will be provided but please bring lunch.


BIOGRAPHY

Andy Butler is an artist, writer, and curator living in Naarm Melbourne. His visual practice employs moving image, performance, painting and text to consider strategies for maintaining hope and optimism at a time of political upheaval, with a strong focus on the political currents of the Indo-Pacific region. Andy has undertaken several residencies including with Asialink, Manila, Powerhouse, Sydney, and the Humboldt Forum, Berlin. He has recently developed significant commissions with the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and Ian Potter Museum of Art. Recent curatorial projects have been developed with Monash University Museum of Art and UTS Gallery, Sydney.
