The Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture Award is a competition that encourages emerging Māori artists to create portraits of their tūpuna (ancestors) in any medium. The Award was launched in August 2020 and is hosted and administered by the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata in honour of Kiingi Tuheitia.

This year, the Judges have selected the 44 finalists making up this years Kiingi Tuheitia Exhibition. From these finalists one overall winner and a runner-up will be chosen.

At the Judges talk, Lisa Reihana (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Hine, Ngāi Tūteauru, Ngā Tupoto) Graham Hoete - Mr G (Ngati Awa, Ngai Te Rangi, Ngati Ranginui) and Steve Gibbs ( Ngāi Tāmanuhiiri, Rongowhakaata, Rongomaiwahine) will share their process of selecting the winner and discuss a selection of works in the exhibition.

This is a free event, hosted in the main Gallery.
