For Lessons in Waiting, participants activate Chris Braddock’s performance-prop-sculptures. Some ‘props’ are wearable and another forms a mat or quilt around the central column of the gallery. Provocative of aprons, cushions, bolsters, and quilts, participants playfully engage in activities that explore the value in resting, stopping, contemplating, and silence. Performance scores assist participants to interact with the props. Both props and scores reference histories of meditation practices including monastic attire and Sufi mysticism. The scores also draw on common commands or requests to wait, as well as some existential literature including Samuel Beckett’s Not I.

All welcome to the series of talks and events for A Time of Waiting, an expansive exhibition which headlines our 2025 programme. For more information please see our website.
