Join Uwe Rieger and Yinan Liu for the opening night of their project LightWing.

LightWing is an interactive installation at the intersection of architecture, art and technology. The kinetic object explores the digital augmentation of structure and materiality, and creates a mysterious sensation of tactile data.

The installation is based on a mixed-reality design strategy that combines physical construction with holographic imagery and sound. The hybrid design object is a fusion of both physical and digital reality. Upon the touch of the visitor, the structure oscillates through space and generates dynamic constructions of light. The combination of tracking sensors, real time computing and simple anaglyph (red/cyan) projection technology allows multiple visitors to simultaneously and collaboratively experience an augmented reality environment.

The project was developed by Uwe Rieger and Yinan Liu at the arc/sec Lab for Digital Spatial Operations at the University of Auckland. The Lab investigates concepts for a world in which digital information is both connected to spatial appearance and linked to material properties. The Lab utilizes prototypes and large scale interactive installations as the driving force for the exploration of tangible digital information. The underlying research aims to re-connect the intangible computer world to multisensory human perceptions and intuitive forms of engagement. Experiments at the Lab are the starting point for both the development of practice oriented applications and a speculation on the future of our built environment.
