Artist Talk

coca.org.nz

In CoCA's upcoming group exhibition Mark Work, Raukura Turei presents a new body of works incorporating layers of onepū, black sand from the west coast beaches of Tāmaki Makaurau. Using a subtractive technique, Turei pulls the sand away to reveal the painted figure beneath. Raukura Turei will discuss this process in conversation with CoCA artistic director and Objectspace director, Kim Paton.

Raukura Turei (Ngāitai ki Tāmaki (Tainui), Ngā Rauru Kītahi) is an Auckland-based multi-disciplinary artist, architect and designer whose art practice uses materials of the whenua in painting to connect with her tīpuna whaea while meditating on sensuality and body sovereignty.

Mark Work is part of CoCA Centre of Contemporary Art Toi Moroki’s programme partnership with Auckland public gallery Objectspace which sees the organisations work together to develop and present exhibitions throughout 2021.
