At the inaugural Architectural Centre AGM in 1947, architect and city councillor George Porter suggested a need to transform the ‘mis-shapen mediocrity’ of everyday urban lives with the ‘full integration of all the senses.’ In this talk, architectural scholar Kate Linzey explores Porter’s sentiment as it relates to the Toomath and Wilson designed Karori Teachers’ Training College campus and to the pottery of Doreen Blumhardt and Roy Cowan. With one eye to her ancestors and the other to the younger generation, Linzey suggests how the material sensibilities of the campus’ design were answers to Porter’s mission.
