Dr Huhana Smith (Ngāti Tukorehe, Ngāti Raukawa ki Te Tonga) is a visual artist, curator and principle investigator in research who engages in major environmental, trans-disciplinary, kaupapa Māori and action-research projects.

She has been co-principle and now principle investigator for research that includes mātauranga Māori methods with sciences to actively address climate change concerns for coastal Māori lands in Horowhenua-Kāpiti.

Huhana actively encourages the use of art and design’s visual systems combined in exhibitions, to expand how solutions might integrate complex issues and make solutions more accessible for local communities.

Supported by Govett Quilliam, this series of relaxed, informal evening talks have been presenting leading innovators and ideas to local audiences for 20 years.

Monica Brewster Evenings: 2020 Programme

The Monica Brewster Evenings (MBE) in association with Govett Quilliam – The Lawyers bring an impressive array of national and international artists and cultural thinkers to New Plymouth. For a different kind of night out, join us for talks, presentations and performances in a casual and intimate atmosphere.

The Govett-Brewster’s 2020 line-up brings together speakers working across a range of disciplines. They are at the forefront of urgent conversations locally, nationally and internationally and leaders within their respective fields, all pushing for new and innovative approaches to engaging with art and culture - often with a deep attentiveness to the specificities of place, and a focus on Indigenous histories and ways of knowing.

The 2020 programme reflects the Gallery’s commitment to supporting considered and forward-thinking approaches to the contemporary challenges felt across Taranaki, Aotearoa and the wider Pacific region and has been designed to facilitate extended, interdisciplinary conversations.
