What does it take to build Asia's first museum of contemporary visual culture from the ground up?

Ulanda Blair is Curator of Moving Image at M+ in Hong Kong, and our final Monica Brewster speaker for 2023.

M+ is a museum of contemporary visual culture famed for its M+ Facade, a 110-meter wide public screen that shows moving image works into Victoria Harbour. Len Lye's Free Radicals was one of the first works screened on the Facade after its opening in 2021, and some of his works are held in the permanent collection there.

Ulanda will discuss her work of collecting, commissioning, presenting, and interpreting moving image art from Asia and beyond, at the same time reflecting on the way that contemporary moving image artists have used the medium to respond to evolving social and cultural circumstances in the region. Ulanda will also speak to her work building the moving-image collection, as well as planning and presenting exhibitions, commissions, cinema screenings, publications, and events; and her prior background as Curator at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne, Australia.

If you are a film or moving image lover, this conversation is not to be missed.

Monica Brewster Evenings are presented in association with Govett Quilliam – The Lawyers and present a diverse array of national and international artists and cultural thinkers in Ngāmotu / New Plymouth.
