In 2019, Grace Lai, Curator of Applied Arts and Design at Auckland Museum, curated the exhibition Carried away: Bags unpacked. The exhibition featured bags that were rich with stories of innovative design, indigenous traditions and personal stories. Through this process she became familiar with the museum’s collection of 18th and 19th century netsuke pieces, that of course were key items in the history of bags and everyday carried objects in Japan.

Join Grace for a talk on historic and contemporary netsuke, as she takes us through Te Uru’s exhibition and her own experiences researching the diverse use of bags across cultures and centuries.
