Join us on Saturday 31 August from 4–6pm for the opening of two new exhibitions – Séraphine Pick: Rider Instinct and Newell Harry and Peter Simpson: From Elsewhere.

Séraphine Pick: Rider Instinct brings together two of Séraphine Pick’s ongoing body of works: her works on paper and her ‘combine paintings’. Over 100 works on paper are included in this exhibition. Working with the physical properties of varied paper substrates, Pick applies media including pencil, gouache, and smoke in an unpremeditated manner until compositions emerge. Guided by materials, Her method can be read as a collaboration with materials, which Pick allows to guide her process.

Newell Harry and Peter Simpson: From Elsewhere is the first in a new series of dialogue exhibitions at Te Uru that connect local and international artists. This exhibition brings together the practices of Australian-born, South African/Mauritian artist Newell Harry (b. 1972) and Aotearoa-born artist Peter Simpson (b. 1990, Ngāti Maniapoto, Waikato-Tainui, Ngāti Pāoa, Ngāti Tamaterā, Indian, Pākehā). Both artists contend with dominant histories in their work through research-led practices and the modification and re-presentation of found material.
