Please join us to celebrate Greta Anderson’s exhibition The Transcenders on Saturday 25 June, when we will host a live performance by the peerless pianist and composer Hermione Johnson from 3pm.
Hermione Johnson is a pianist and composer from Tāmaki Makaurau. She is best known as an improviser, and with this she has been a significant force in the New Zealand experimental music scene. She has toured internationally playing prepared piano in Europe and Australia, as well as part of local festivals such as Lines of Flight, Pyramid Power, and the NoWhere Festival. Alongside preparing pianos, Hermione plays synthesizers. Her music for The Transcenders will be made with three synthesizers - a solo act called Ogadon.
The Transcenders by Greta Anderson is a series of photographs which pays tribute to female band members from the independent music scene the artist grew up in. Anderson has long used objects or places as symbols in her work, and she calls this new body of work 'photography of association'. The images are described as a stream of consciousness, fragments of songs, and fleeting impressions of things she associates with the female band members who inspire her, one of whom is Hermione Johnson (see image above).
