Film Screening: Documentary portrait of acclaimed New Zealand photographer Peter Peryer

Every Saturday from now until 16 March, 2pm - 2.30pm

Ever wondered why artist Peter Peryer photographed himself holding a chicken?

Directed by Greg Stitt ('Just Me and Mario'), this documentary traces the path of one of New Zealand's most significant, and intriguing, art photographers — from "crucified Christ to laughing Buddha" — through Catholic themes, to a more minimalist approach. Also showcased are some of Peryer's captivating images: the "bodies of work, families of photos, and images that rhyme".

Peter Peryer passed away on 18 November 2018.

Peter was a senior figure among New Zealand artists with a practice at the vanguard of photography in Aotearoa and long term resident of New Plymouth. His association with the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery has been particularly close and enduring, beginning with the 1996 exhibition curated by Greg Burke – Govett-Brewster Director 1998-2005 — that was instrumental in connecting Peter to New Plymouth. This collaboration includes a major exhibition, The left hand raised (2001) again curated by Greg Burke, extensive collection holdings, and the gallery’s support of a documentary about Peter by the filmmaker Shirley Horrocks that will premiere at the Govett-Brewster in 2019.

The most recent exhibition of Peter’s work at the Govett-Brewster was a special exhibition of recent work staged in 2016 at the Old TSB Bank Building in Devon Street West.
