Steve Carr Book Launch

Saturday 9th March, 12 – 1pm.

Please join us to celebrate the release of two new Steve Carr publications, Smoke Bubbles 1–58 and Watermelon.

Steve Carr Smoke Bubbles 1–58 60 pages, 28 x 19cm Edition of 300 ISBN: 978-0-6482628-9-3 Published by Perimeter Editions, Melbourne, Australia

Smoke Bubbles 1–58 reproduces a series of photographs Carr made while on a residency in Japan in 2010. Taking the cover of American soul singer Smokey Robinson's 1973 debut LP Smokey as their point of departure, these images are both planetary and happily preposterous in their bearings. Page after page, we witness soap bubbles filled with cigarette smoke floating, flitting and shimmering against an inky-black studio backdrop – transitory, richly aesthetic moments plucked from a stench of cigarette plumes and a squelch of suds.

Steve Carr Watermelon 72 pages, 21 x 14.5cm Text by Aaron Kreisler Edition of 700 ISBN: 978-0-473-45422-7 Published with the support of the University of Canterbury Harkness Grant

Watermelon documents a preparatory test shoot for Carr’s 2015 film, Watermelon. Everything happens within a single take, a little over thirty minutes in duration, and focuses on a single repetitive action. A minute by minute transcript of the real time discussion around the test shoots successes and failures is paired with thumbnail images of the ensuing filmic action, leading to the highly anticipated final moment.
