Join us for a talk with artist Kate Stevens West and Curators Dr Jane Malthus and Moira White about Kate's series of paintings, Taurewarewa, which include depictions of garments held in the Otago Museum collection.

Kate's recent work explores Kāi Tahutaka by working with historical research and traditional paints and pigments. She'll discuss the process behind the creation of Taurewarewa with Moira and Jane, who both supported the development of the paintings by sharing details about the dress, undergarments, nightdress, and cap seen in the paintings.

Taurewarewa is currently on show as part of Kia ora Whaea at Blue Oyster Art Project Space.

Kia ora Whaea presents new work by Alix Ashworth, Caitlin Rose Donnelly, Emma Kitson, and Kate Stevens West. The exhibition was developed after the artists were introduced through Paemanu: Tauraka Toi - A Landing Place, a landmark exhibition featuring works and performances by more than 40 Kāi Tahu artists at Dunedin Public Art Gallery between 11 December 2021 – 25 April 2022.
