Please join Artspace Aotearoa on Friday 8 April for the opening of Te Taiao and Shadows Studio: Chatting with Scones. We will come together at 2:00pm at Myers Park for karakia and waiata, with kai provided by Pici and The Boil Up Crew. From 3:30pm, join us at Artspace Aotearoa for cold drinks and kōrero with the artists, and see Te Taiao and Shadow’s Studio for yourself.

Te Taiao is a series of whakarei artist editions initiated and made by artist Charles Turetahi (Teare) in collaboration with local Karangahape whānau. Teare is a woodcarver and social activist who is part of the Boil Up Crew, a collective based in Tāmaki Makaurau.

These handmade whakarei reclaim indigenous taonga such as kauri, matai and tōtara to celebrate Tātai Whakapapa (Reciting Genealogy or Epistemology). Te Taiao employs Mātauranga Māori (Indigenous knowledge system specific to Aotearoa) & Te Ao Māori as regenerative solutions to heal our Taiao.

Shadow’s Studio: Chatting with Scones is a photographic project by Shadow with Dieneke Jansen. This project was created within the local Karangahape Road district which is also home to Artspace Aotearoa. Through a series of convivial photo-shoots taken at the local community space Old Folks Association, artist and subject enjoyed a social interaction of company and sharing of kai: scones.

With special thanks to John Hoani Heta, Gina Shelford, Daniel Takarua, Robyn Prior, Rob Smith, Stephen Williams, Tosh Ahkit, Greg Smith and Richard Turipa.

Artspace Aotearoa would like to thank Pici and The Boil Up Crew for their generous contributions.
