This lab offers an introduction to contemporary conservation, art handling, and installation principles.

Claire Olsen, Collections Registrar from Auckland Art Gallery Toi Tāmaki, will present a best practice approach to artwork care, considering differing environments and fixtures, materials and surfaces.

Participants will discuss care principles while utilising provided resources to develop practical knowledge of moving, installing, storing, and caring for artwork in the long-term.


Principles of contemporary conservation, packing artworks for moving and storing, care for artwork in the studio, gallery and in between.

The Caring for Contemporary art Skills Lab is suitable for artists, technicians, and gallery workers at an early stage of their career, or those wanting a refresher.


Claire Olsen is a collection care specialist based in Tāmaki Makarau. On completion of a Master of Visual Arts Claire’s work has been focussed in Museum, Library and Gallery environments. From 2009-2019 Claire was part of the Conservation team at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Claire has a special interest in preventative conservation including display and storage practice related contemporary art. Claire was an executive member of the New Zealand Conservators of Cultural materials (NCCM), the professional body of Conservators in New Zealand. Now working as a Registrar at Auckland Art Gallery with a primary focus on collection activities including acquisitions, storage, legal documentation, and collection policies, Claire has a special interest in working with artists and galleries on how to best care for artworks and understand the principles of collection care in their approach.
