“Has the pen or pencil dipped so deep in the blood of the human race as the needle?” asked Olive Schreiner in an urge to provoke the hegemonies of representation.
Embroidery can be an act of radical engagement with storied histories, and this has been a source of fascination for artist Areez Katki. Over a continual engagement with mark-making over domestic cloth, Areez pursues ways to decentralise dominant modes of storytelling. For his first solo exhibition at McLeavey Gallery, Areez has drawn from rich pools of familial biomythography to explore themes of migration and cultural hybridity, framed by the tactile and corporeal products of his Zoroastrian lineage.
This exhibition is presented in conjunction with Threads: Textiles Festival. With more than 15 free exhibitions and a roster of workshops, talks and tours at venues spanning Lower Hutt, Petone, Thorndon and the central city, Threads sheds new night on contemporary textile practices in Aotearoa and beyond.
