The New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts is very excited to be entering into collaboration with the wonderful and beautiful DoubleTree by Hilton Wellington to provide a superb platform for presenting the works of contemporary New Zealand artists to visitors to Wellington.
Selected works by invited artists will be exhibited within the public spaces within the hotel for three months. The works will be available for purchase during the exhibition.
The initial exhibition, running from 11 November 2024 to the middle of February 2025 features the stunning watercolours of Jacky Pearson and superb watercolours and oils of Svetlana Orinko.
Jacky Pearson
Born in UK, Jacky has lived in NZ since 1991 and has been painting watercolours for over 30 years. She is an international tutor, teaching watercolours around the world on Zoom and in in-person workshops.
Her style is direct realism, painting on location or in the studio. Jacky has represented New Zealand in international competitions, including the International Watercolour Exhibition in Moscow in 2021, and is included in the permanent collection of the International Museum of Watercolours in Mexico. She received a merit in the International Watercolour Society 2022 exhibition. She has had a successful worldwide calendar series, “Lighthouses of New Zealand” and has also been published in international art books, magazines and numerous art articles.
“I try to paint a feeling. I love the natural landscape and used to work as a soil scientist. Painting is my way of studying nature. Of particular interest are shadows, with their range of tones, colours, reflected light and edges. This has led me into painting portraits as I can use the way watercolours are so alive when they flow and mingle giving beautiful transparent effects in shadows. Although I paint in other mediums - oils, and charcoal - it is watercolour that particularly gives me the freedom to get those wonderful subtle and seemingly out of control moments."
Svetlana Orinko
Svetlana Orinko is a world-renowned artist who has established herself as a leading master of watercolour and oil mediums over her 30-year career in New Zealand. She has a growing reputation as one of the country’s top artists and tutors, winning numerous awards and gaining a strong national and international following. Her extraordinary journey as an artist has been fuelled by her resilience, tenacity and unfettered curiosity.
Svetlana is celebrated for her incredible collection of work and relentless pursuit for artistic growth, and her willingness to push boundaries grants her work an authentic, timeless quality.
After completing rigorous artistic training in a classical ‘Old Masters’ art education programme for ten years in her homeland, Svetlana was an accomplished and disciplined artist, but with limited opportunities to make a living. With a young daughter, and expecting her second, she made the life-changing decision to emigrate to New Zealand and arrived in rural Canterbury in 1992.
Today, Svetlana works from her studio in Fendalton, Christchurch. Covering an infinite variety of subjects, her sensitive, lyrical and atmospheric paintings have captivated people and galleries around the world.
"I see beauty in the simple things. I am attracted to any subject matter that contains a strong abstract pattern and display interesting, beautiful colours. There is a poetry in simplicity. I look for how light transitions across a form. I like to transform my chosen subject into visual poetic language. Subject matter sometimes dictates whether I choose to work in watercolour or in oil or even in drawing but often it is simply a preference based on my mood. I am constantly striving to remain open to new possibilities and innovative ways and, if possible, not to remain stagnant all the time."
