There are spaces that encourage us to be together and keep us apart. They define how we move, what we do and the way we interact with one another.

It’s these physical and sometimes emotional parameters that help us negotiate our personal relationships on a daily basis. Whether we are wanting to be social, intimate or have time away from our significant others, we are constrained and directed by the environments and objects that we surround ourselves with. Living rooms, beds, kitchen tables and public parks all impact on the way we live.

With a quirky combination of artworks from The Dowse Collection, Can’t Be Together is an exhibition exploring the notion of togetherness in its various forms. From a vase of flowers to say sorry, get well soon or I love you, a portable chair made for two or a touching portrait of a child’s first jump, each individual work speaks to the need for us to express our connections to one another.

Can’t Be Together features works by Nick Austin, Susannah Bridges, Jim Cooper, Chiara Corbelletto, Ann Culy, Julian Dashper, Neil Dawson, Edward Fuller, Janet Green, Kate Newby, Peter Robinson, Layla Rudneva-Mackay, Terry Stringer, Ann Verdcourt, Lois White and Cliff Whiting.
