Chinese artist Cao Fei explores shifting relationships between humanity, technology, and the city—and builds alternative worlds. In 2017, she was awarded the prestigious BMW art-car commission. Connecting ancient spiritual beliefs with contemporary technology, and art with industry, she transformed a BMW M6 GT6 into a vehicle for virtual and spiritual travel. 'Unmanned', the project’s film component, follows a time-travelling monk into a virtual future. The film is itself a vehicle—a hypnotic mash of ad, music clip, and sci-fi video art. The show also includes an earlier Cao Fei film, playing in the Auditorium. 'La Town' (2014) offers another fantastical, but dystopian, vision, told through model architectural sets and figures.
