Caught; slack and taut brings together the work of Daegan Wells (Murihiku), Isabella Loudon* (Wellington) and Rachel Hope Peary (Hamilton) as three contemporary practitioners who, through their work, explore line, surface, and tension.

Realised via weaving, sculpture, painting and lacing, Caught; slack and taut presents fibre in various states: pinched between the edges of a frame, solidified in concrete or captured within the tight warp/weft of an article.

Wells graduated from Ilam School of Fine Arts in 2015, going on to receive the Olivia Spencer Bower residency Award in 2017. Most recently, Wells presented a solo exhibition titled Bush Coat at Wellington’s Enjoy Gallery (2020), was included in a group exhibition titled Start With A Vase at Hastings City Gallery (2019).

Loudon graduated with a BFA from Massey University in 2016. Most recently, Loudon presented wastelands, a solo presentation at Te Tuhi’s Papatūnga in Parnell, Auckland. In 2018, Loudon presented Labyrinth, a solo exhibition at The Dowse Art Museum, Wellington, and in the same year, presented a project at the Auckland Art Fair. Loudon is represented by Robert Heald Gallery, Wellington.

Peary graduated from Wintec with a Bachelor of Media Arts with Honours in 2018. Most recently, Peary presented with Laree Payne Gallery at the Auckland Art Fair (2021). In 2020 Peary presented alongside Kate Tucker (Melbourne) and Tia Ansell (Melbourne) in a group exhibition titled Accommodate at Weasel Gallery.
