This exhibition showcases a selection of paintings, drawings and prints by Don Binney, one of New Zealand’s most recognised artists. Binney’s stylised birds are set in his favourite landscapes, such as Te Henga on Auckland’s west coast. He uses paint to create rich and textured scenes of scrubby bush, contoured sand dunes and reflective lagoons. His drawings are equally expressive, using shading and the texture of the paper to capture the beauty of New Zealand’s coastal areas. Binney was a keen ornithologist from childhood and a keen observer of the relationship between land, environment and creatures. He was awarded an OBE for services to the arts in 1995 and his works are featured in art collections around New Zealand.

The exhibition is curated by Gregory O’Brien and was initially presented at Marlborough Gallery.
