Travis MacDonald
Travis MacDonald (b. 1990, Bunnythorpe, New Zealand) lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. MacDonald’s understated paintings often feature a palette of homemade paints and subjects that bridge the banal and the absurd. He draws upon his interest in art history, music, language and philosophy to navigate the semantics of material, observation and narrative.
Dr P
Dr P was born in Whanganui. She lives and works in Auckland. Her primal zodiac sign is the Vulture. Fellow Vultures include Gwyneth Paltrow, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Truman Capote. Dr P is not a doctor or a dentist, lawyer or plumber. She is an occasional writer, indoor landscape garden designer and General Secretary of the Mokopōpaki Exhibitions Committee (MMPK).
Selected exhibitions include: Colonial Road, Pah Homestead, Auckland; Colonial Road, Mokopōpaki, Auckland; Domestic #3: Ahimaru, Mokopōpaki, Auckland; and This Joyous, Chaotic Place: He Waiata Tangi-ā-Tahu, Mokopōpaki, Auckland.
Dr P appears in collaboration with Envy, Wellington and Mokopōpaki, Auckland.
Envy is a commercial gallery in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, interested in fostering relationships between intergenerational artists from Aotearoa and abroad. The gallery focuses on curated group presentations alongside solo exhibitions on a regular monthly programme.
Envy will present a solo wall presentation of New Zealand born, Melbourne based painter Travis MacDonald, whose work mixes the artist’s city and rural backgrounds within a dreamy and surreal frame. To further contextualise MacDonald’s paintings, the gallery will present a sculptural installation by Auckland based artist Dr P that comments on New Zealand’s colonial history while addressing European art historical references within a distinct Māori worldview.
