Sculpture at the wall – rondels of rusted cast iron spaced, tilted and lain flat atop stainless steel – that is Flower Systems, new works by Anton Parsons at Jonathan Smart Gallery until Saturday, May 17th. These are weighty forms, their sense of mass accentuated by side-views of angled and delicately poised planes of metal. The rust is varied in its patina – light and powdery-looking at times, dense and dark at other moments. It seems that the iron “petals” float and move within the stasis. The feeling is hushed, rich and contemplative, like a suite of rose windows in a wood darkened church interior. Which is pretty curious for this modernist man of metal.
