Derek Henderson’s exhibition records a seven day walk around Wellington’s wild and beautiful coast from Titahi Bay to Owhiro Bay.

Sky, sea, foreshore, cliff are presented in sharp clear images in a celebration of straight photography. While the photographer’s work has been described as “anti-heroic and anti-iconic”, here we have iconic images of this stark and mostly untraversed landscape.

In Go for a walk, Henderson takes us with him on this challenging hike – a walk that most have only experienced between Owhiro Bay and Red Rock. A series of smaller images trace the route in chronological order while one large print layers images together to create a summary amalgam of the experience.

Derek Henderson is a photograher who works across a broad range of genres from landscape, to portraiture, to fashion and architecture. He has exhibited for over 20 years and has work in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia, the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetu, and the Wallace Trust Art Collection.
