Laree Payne Gallery is delighted to present I'M JUST A SPECTATOR, a solo exhibition of new works by Hannah Ireland. I'M JUST A SPECTATOR is Ireland's third presentation with the gallery following their participation in Handshake in Hamilton (2020) and Novella (2021).
Comprising ten 'guests' (Ireland's single sitter portraits) alongside five larger window-pane-paintings, I'M JUST A SPECTATOR includes Ireland's largest and most complex works to date.
A complimentary short essay written by Amiria Taumata is offered with the exhibition. Taumata opens "I'm just a spectator is a tender offer to gaze; an open invitation to an individual yet collection contemplation. Hannah Ireland's practice moves through a space of looking, observing, (dis)associating. They allow us in for. amomentary collapse of the opposition between the maker and the spectator, making room for those who like to look."
