This exhibition explores the environments that inspired Lye’s sense of wonder, from the crashing waves of his New Zealand childhood to the marvels of the heavens, both the scientific and mythic. Although well-known for the thrilling and sublime engineering of his kinetic sculpture, Lye’s passion for movement – across a variety of media that included film and painting too – went hand in hand with the seductive energies of the natural world. Popular works like Storm King and Particles in Space feature in Heaven and Earth alongside rarely seen works from the Len Lye Foundation Collection including Rain Tree and Moonbead.
Curated by Paul Brobbel and Michelle Wang
