The Vivian is proud to showcase the work of young Melbourne painter, Nicholas Ives, in his first small-scale show in the South Gallery. Nic’s work is already highly regarded in Australia, and we are proud to be able to represent him in New Zealand.
Nic’s practice seems dark at first; with hooded, oddly costumed figures that loom quizzically from timeless landscapes. But they are also exercises in humour, drawing influences from video gaming and comics, to the timelessly powerful work of old masters such as Goya and Rubens.
Delightfully dark, richly opulent, and strangely decadent – we encourage you to experience the work of this young artist in person.
