Colombian artist Nicolás Paris transforms exhibition spaces into places of experimentation and exchange. With an interest in architecture and a background in education, Paris’ project at the Govett-Brewster is driven by his philosophical investigations into the processes of learning, nature, art and contemporary life. It explores the diverse ways we are connected with others and our surroundings. Paris brings the outside environment inside, implanting ferns and lichens within the very fabric of the Gallery. Logs and driftwood, encased in glass and suspended from the ceiling respectively, further play on the perception of nature and transform the space. The exhibition becomes a site of growth and learning, in constant transformation.

Nicolás Paris is the 2019 Govett-Brewster Art Gallery Aotearoa New Zealand Artist in Residence. The residency is supported by Creative NZ Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa. The artist has conceived a series of public programmes, educational projects and collaborative workshops both within and outside the Gallery that will be updated throughout the exhibition.
