The over-all result is that of allegorical narrative painting, yet these stories are stubbornly open-ended and intentionally un-determined. Sections of a canvas can be surreal – even otherworldly – while elsewhere there might revisions of history and depictions of more humble domestic activities.

Woodruffe’s dynamic use of colour and repeating forms cuts through these compositions, with suspended structures and shapes, which at times seem to oscillate between foreground and background. These paintings are a celebration of the everyday, an everyday that reflects the time, the landscapes, and the cultural contexts the artist finds himself living in.
