As the first major survey exhibition of Hotere’s artistic career for over twenty years, Ātete gathers works from collections across Aotearoa. Hotere’s art charted his journeys throughout Aotearoa and the world, reflecting on his experiences, identity, and politics.

This exhibition is shaped by a collective consideration of these journeys, creating meeting points between the major concerns present in Hotere’s work. Including formative abstraction, strident works of protest, and landmark works including Black Phoenix and Godwit/Kuaka, Ātete celebrates Hotere’s artistic achievements and brings his vision to a new generation.

A partnership project between the Dunedin Public Art Gallery and Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū.

Ralph Hotere: Ātete (to resist) is on display at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery from 14 November 2020 until 28 February 2021, and opens subsequently at Christchurch Art Gallery on 27 March 2021.
