Redefining Space presents an alternative collecting approach for the Forrester Gallery collection, as a recent bequest provides an opportunity to consider its future. While fortunate to feature various lush landscape paintings and portraits that reflect the Waitaki rohe and its social histories, this exhibition ponders: which voices have been missing?
Redefining Space accommodates an exciting kete of contemporary artworks new to our whare toi – as small taoka that each honour the cultural narratives of their makers. They seek to embrace Waitaki’s vibrant cultural diversity while complementing the gallery’s existing collection of over 2000 works of art. These works share glimpses into contemporary art historical discourse around Aotearoa New Zealand, at this moment in time. They provide us the opportunity to empower our local audiences while sharing who we are with our visitors.
