Simon Morris’s Room of Time is part of an ongoing exploration into the mindful occupation of space through time-based abstract painting.

A large-scale drawing moves across the two long walls of the Hancock Gallery. Recurring forms painted directly onto the wall, will develop a pattern that is repetitive and geometric in nature, but also responsive to variables related to the body, time and application over the period of its making. Painting techniques and self-imposed restraints always act as a starting point for Morris to explore broader conceptual possibilities and outcomes.

Te Whanganui-a-Tara artist Simon Morris has made site-based paintings in most of Aotearoa’s public galleries. This will be his third ‘wall work’ at City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi. Each brushstroke extends what has become a sustained encounter with these spaces that stretches back over twenty-five years, but meets us in the direct experience of a painting encountered in the here and now.
