Exhibition Details

Having presented an extensive survey exhibition of Christchurch-based artist Julia Morison in late 2022, Trish Clark Gallery will be presenting a significant new body of works by Morison at Aotearoa Art Fair 2023.

The nine large-scale paintings, notable for their gestural expressiveness standing in animated counterpoint to their gridded structure, exemplify Morison’s persistent innovation of her subject matter and form, which has seen her work across media with materials as diverse as blood, gold, hair and beeswax. As stated by noted curator and writer Justin Paton, “Morison’s use of her sources is creative, and wilfully idiosyncratic – she calls them ‘a skeleton you can spin off from’ – one of the pleasures offered by her art [over] decades, is watching her system mutate and ramify in unpredictable ways”.
