Alvin Kumar (b.1997, Tāmaki Makaurau) is an emerging artist of Sāmoan and Indo-Fijian descent, currently based in Ōtepoti Dunedin where they are studying towards a Bachelor of Visual Art at Te Kura Matatini ki Otago — the Dunedin School of Art. Their practice explores fa’afafine identity, cultural kitsch and the impacts of Western globalisation on the Pacific diaspora. Alvin works across a wide variety of media, including sculpture, painting, and moving image. Alvin’s first solo exhibition, SIVA IN TRANSIT presents a self-portrait sculpture that reflects on how trade, travel, exoticisation and commodification have shaped, and been shaped by, Pasifika culture, and the impacts of this phenomenon as lived experience across the diaspora.
