Soft Filter is a new large-scale commission for Tauranga Art Gallery’s atrium by Wellington-based artist Andrew Beck. Raised in Tauranga, Beck has exhibited globally and is well known for his unique contributions to camera-less photography. Returning photography to its analogue roots, Beck’s highly experimental photographs are produced by exposing large sheets of light sensitive paper in the darkroom. By exposing these sheets through a range of objects he captures shadows, light effects, and movement at a 1:1 scale. In the resulting images the familiar becomes oddly alien and concepts of realism and abstraction merge, allowing us to see everyday phenomena with new eyes.
