Ross Jones is an Auckland based painter known for his meticulously detailed bright and vivid scenes. Working in oil on fine portrait linen, Jones creates large and mid-scale works that connect with playful notions of juxtaposition and nostalgia. Through his vibrant compositions and intriguing subject matter, he invites the viewer to engage with his role as storyteller while intentionally leaving room for personal projection. “My paintings are all about telling stories, they are a mixture of seemingly perfect places and events, but like all good stories not everything is as it seems. There is just enough information in the composition to engage the viewer, from there it’s up to them to fill in the gaps and create their own story. I still love the line ‘Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story’, don’t let your imagination stop you from seeing the big picture. How far the journey takes you is entirely up to you”.
After graduating from Te Kura Hoahoa—School of Design Innovation, Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, (formerly Wellington’s School of Design) in the early 90’s, Jones spent 15 years working on commissioned paintings for commercial clients in New Zealand and around the world before shifting his full attention to the development of his own unique and personal style. He now paints full time from his studio which, while containing the usual artists tools and easels, is also full of books, tin toys, lead soldiers and anything else that may trigger his imagination.
“Sketchbooks are full of new paintings ready to happen, but each must wait their turn, some ideas will change in composition or direction and others may be ditched all together”.
Nostalgia frequently inspires Jones’ compositions. As a child, he built balsa wood aeroplanes, a hobby he loved alongside collecting tin toys, robots, toy soldiers and cars. Hours upon hours were spent cutting, crafting, gluing, and sanding his model planes. Then, with a combination of anticipation and dread, he would launch the plane into the yard into almost certain danger or worse - total destruction. There was always an inevitable outcome to the process but the chance to see the plane fly, even if for just a few seconds made it all worthwhile.
