Tyne Gordon’s exhibition of new work, Suntrap, explores the anatomy of the landscape and the body, and the similarities between them.

Tyne approaches making with intuition, meditation, and method, searching for a balance between a material’s natural behaviour, and her own deliberate interruption of process. An intense interest in materiality is a significant aspect of her practice and she incorporates a range of materials in her work, from paint and metal, to resin, organic matter, tyre tubes, cellophane, and ribbon. In her practice, Tyne is searching for an equilibrium of binaries — liquid and solid, transparency and opacity, figuration and abstraction. Her works are consciously imperfect.

A feature work in Suntrap is Soft Machine, a 2m long pewter tapestry designed to incorporate the shifting natural light that filters through the gallery's large windows.

Tyne Gordon graduated from the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts with a BFA (Hons) degree in painting in 2015 and lives and works in Ōtautahi, Christchurch. Recent exhibitions include: The Right Place?, Auckland Art Fair, Jhana Millers; Yore, Laree Payne Gallery, Kirikiriroa, Hamilton; Group Exhibition, Jhana Millers, Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington; Visitor, Toi Moroki Centre of Contemporary Art, Ōtautahi, Christchurch; Double Dribble, Ilam School of Fine Arts, Ōtautahi, Christchurch.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an essay from Lucy Jackson.
